Not how I had it planned

I wandered into Patches room and discovered that he had emptied the contents of his dresser onto the floor. When asked why he did this Patches replied “I was looking for my underpants.” So now he is wearing underpants around the house for the first time in his life. My plan involved keeping him in pull ups until after the end of May when all the book hoop-la was out of the way. I didn’t want to cross this bridge until I had the brainspace to do it calmly. Apparently my schedule does not match Patches schedule. Here we go…

  1. So far no good luck has been forthcoming. We’ve gone through two pairs of underwear in two hours. Patches is back in pull-ups for the night. He’ll only wear underpants tomorrow if he insists.

  3. Yeah, I don’t have any experience in this kind of thing myself. I’ve got lots of nephews and nieces, though, and my siblings’ adventures in this area don’t leave me eagerly anticipating this stage. (Once I’ve got a wife and kids of course…) :-p

  5. How old is he? Is it working? My little boy is nearing that time in his life, and I’m so nervous about it – I’ve only helped potty train my little sister, and we did that by using a kitchen timer to tell her to sit on the potty every hour. Didn’t work so well.

  7. About a year ago I wrote an entry on my potty training theory: http://sandratayler.livejournal.com/67824.html
I also recommend the book “Toilet Training Without Tears.”

Patches is back in pullups today. I simply put them on him without asking and he didn’t even mention underpants. It isn’t a failure, it’s part of the process. I’ve realized that he simply can’t tell when he needs to go and he has no clue how to hold urine back. Learning those skills involves salty foods, lots of fluids, lots of patience, and lots of puddles. I’m not willing to tackle that until after we get Howard’s books mailed.

  9. I don’t blame you – we were trying to potty train mine, but he’s at the same point – he can identify what he’s done *after* the fact, but he doesn’t know before hand. And since he’s going through the whole “I’m a toddler and I want to send the new baby back!” phase… We figure we’ll wait a few months until he’s a bit more adjusted, and I guess we’ll try again.

When we were trying the potty thing, he just quit pooping altogether. He had maybe two bowel movements a week. Poor kid, he was so sad and confused.

So I figure waiting is best. He’s got plenty of time before he’s going to be in kindergarten, or even Sunbeams. (I’m assuming they want kids to be potty trained before Sunbeams – I’ve never asked.)

  11. Sunbeams are mostly potty trained, but not all of them are. It definitely isn’t a requirement. My Link was a Sunbeam for several months before he made the switch.
