Apparently pomegranates are one of nature’s laxatives. I wish I’d known that before I allowed my four kids to split an entire pomegranate between them.

’nuff said.

  1. I grew up eating a whole one at a time, too. 🙂 I don’t remember any laxative effect.

But in the spirit of the post, and as a nursery school teacher, let me please request that people whose children are still learning to use the toilet reliably shouldn’t allow their children to eat seven homemade bran muffins for breakfast.

  3. Except they aren’t. If you just strain the pulp off of the seeds and spit the seeds out instead of swallowing them or grind them very well with your back teeth then there is no laxative effect.

Strawberry, kiwi, and blueberry seeds have the same sort of laxative effect. Pineapple will too but I’m not sure if that’s because of the strings in it or the high sugar content.

  5. LOL!!!! That’s an awful lot for any digestive system to hold in 🙂

I actually had the preschool teacher ask me to “PLEASE stop feeding Eva so much fiber!!!”. We really didn’t give her all that much, though.

  7. I suspect it’s like fiber, wher eyou can build up a tolerance to it. I always eat the seeds whole. Strawberries, kiwis and blueberries don’t mess me up, either.

Now… prunes… half a box of them on an empty stomach… that’s a different story.

  9. Possibly. But then my kids never had a problem with the promegranates. The kiwis, strawberries, blueberries, apples, carrots, and pineapple were what got them going. I know that prunes get me going and therefore I don’t eat more than one in a sitting and try to put at least 4 hours between sittings.
