Giggles are required at a slumber party with four teenage girls. We had them in abundance last night. There was a remarkable lack of fingernail polish, hair dos, or phone calls to boys. Instead they watched Doctor Who “Blink” and Speed Racer, listened to video game music, and read each other sections of the manga novels that they are writing. At one point Howard mused aloud wondering if we were hosting a slumber party or a writing group. Whichever it was, I love seeing Kiki have geek girl friends who share her interests. We were also greatly amused to hear them divy up dibs on the male leads in the Speed Racer movie. They also declared David Tennant to be cute until they learned that he is *gasp* 37 years old! This morning the four girls amused themselves by creating a game out of the premise for “Blink.” Two of the girls took the parts of the angels while the other two tried not to get caught. They really needed a larger space. We’ll have to let them play again some night in the back yard when the weather is warmer.

More David Tennant for me! 😀
They watched Blink???
I couldn’t sleep for two days after I saw that episode…
Kiki is officially WAY more hard-core than I am…
I was gonna ask if they actually slept.
Blink was much more like the classic Dr Who from my childhood, where you hid behind the couch from scary monsters. Although maybe Kiki is a tad old for that now, I was only about 7 or 8 at the time.
This was a second viewing for Kiki. She couldn’t sleep after the first time. Then she went to school and told the whole story to all of her friends. Naturally, they all wanted to watch it after that. They did remove the small gargoyle statue from the room before they went to sleep.
Blink is really scary and I still get creeped out by man-shaped shadows when I walk at night.
Also, on the point of games-based-on-Blink.. I LARP. One of the geekiest things you can do. One of the current campaigns is called St. Wolfgang’s Vampire Hunters. Basically, players as a secret order of monster hunters vs the darkness. So much fun to crew for, especially. We do our best to keep from offending anyone too. Works mostly, so far.
Anyway, my friend who helps run that game really loved Blink, so she put some monsters into a recent game based on the angels. This was a weekend game, about 25 players and about the same crew, on a scout camp for the weekend, dressing up playying silly buggers in the woods.
Me and two other crew members, dressed in white robes, with giant foam wings strapped to our backs, appeared at the edge of the village square, standing motionless in the shadows. The players though we were sent by god to bless them.. as we did out best to do the thing the angels do, they got kinda creeped out over the weekend as we kept re-appearing. And they eventually worked out that when we did catch them, rather than blessing them we.. stole their piety.. basically made them doubt the existence of god. Some good roleplaying there eventually.
When they caught me, I had the entire player group standing around me, all watching me so I couldn’t move until they worked out how to destroy me. It was great. Later I was informed that some people had nightmares about that game.
Wow. That sounds like fun.
