Spring Break

Spring break has begun. For the next week my kids will be home all day every day. This significantly changes the rhythm of things around my house. I’m planning to treat the time as a semi-vacation for me. I’ll be taking the kids on outings to get them out of the house. Otherwise we’ll all end up squabbling and grouchy in very short order. It looks like we might even have nice weather for most of it. Yay.

  1. Cool. Ours (Easter holidays) was the 2 weeks following Easter weekend.

Perhaps I should give detail here for those whose schools work to a different system. Starting at Christmas, we get the following:

Christmas holiday: 2 weeks around Christmas/new year.
Spring term from then until Easter, with a 1 week “half term” roughly in the middle.
Easter holiday, 2 weeks, varies – in this area, always includes Easter itself. In other areas, this year, as Easter was very early, they had Good Friday and Easter Monday, then back to school and 2 weeks around now. We get an extra day for Good Friday or Easter Monday if the Easter weekend is at either end of the holiday.
Summer term, from Easter until about 20th July, with 1 week half-term at the end of May, including the last Monday in May which is “spring bank holiday”. Also an extra day off at the first Monday in May.
    Summer holidays – 6-and-a-bit weeks.
Autumn term, from early in September until Christmas with a 1 week half-term in October.

They keep talking about changing it, but they haven’t, yet. The kids get a total of about 190 days per year in school.
