a day for the kids

Yesterday I was beyond stressed. But at the end of the day it was all done. All the lists were printed. All the mailers were stamped. Menus were planned. Purchase lists were written. Until the books actually arrived there were no further business things I could do.

Today I put all of that out of my head. Today belonged to my children. When they needed something, I was there to provide it. I squished playdough. I took them to the library. I registered them for swim lessons. I pushed them on the swings. I can’t say I was always calm, but I tried. I tried not to spend time staring out the front window hoping for a delivery truck. My kids needed me today. I needed today. Because as soon as the books arrive I’ll be shuffling them off so I can work. At some un-noticed point in the past 6 months I changed from a stay-at-home mom to a work-from-home mom.

So much of my focus has been on making this book project work. When the books are mailed, the release party is over, and the convention is over I really need to reprioritize. Gleek and Patches are showing myriad small signs of insecurity. Gleek keeps asking for “mommy time” and she wants it right now. Unfortunately I can’t do that, I can’t promise it for another two weeks which is endless ages away for her. Both Gleek and Patches are having troubles settling down to sleep despite the fact that they spend every day cranky from exhaustion. Summertime is going to require an enforced naptime for them. Maybe in two weeks I’ll have the brainspace to pull that off.

I hope the books arrive first thing tomorrow. I want to get this all over with so life can be normal again.

  1. I get the feeling it’s in the air – Pan is having sleeping problems and needy issues, too.

But good for you for getting to the library! I’d actually better go get dressed so I can take my little bits to the library as well. Too bad pajamas are so comfortable…

(PS: this is , I just changed my name. So don’t get confused!)

  3. Hang in there. I’m glad to see there was a day you could take off and enjoy.

Since you’ve got cell phones now, how about taking off with the kids to be with them, and letting Howard call you when the delivery truck arrives?

And I’m certain you’ve got lists out the wazoo. What thoughts running around in your head *have* to be recited and maintained in the head? Can they go onto a list so the paper does the remembering for you and your brainspace gets a rest? Between lists and Howard, you’ve got plenty of outside-the-head storage space.

BIG HUGS. It’s a gorgeous, low-stress day here, felines in the lap, light breeze, birds singing outside (felines on the windowsill whining to be let out to catch birds), and a cello concerto on the speakers. I wish I could ship some of it to you.

  5. I had no idea that the books were making it so stressful. I mean, I know that it was stress for you and Mr. Taylor, but I had failed to account for the effect it might have on the young ones… I shall increase my hopes for the books to arrive soon, and for all to return to normal…

And I am pretty sure that the rest of the Schlockers would agree when I say the following: “If it means a couple extra days wait, then take the time for your kids. Us waiting a few extra days is nothing compared to the mental welbeing of you and your family. Many of us have said for Mr. Taylor to take a week off if it needed doing, and now I extend the same to you. We’re waited years to finally have this tone in our collection of wonders. A wee bit more time will not kill us. Your family comes first, and we will always understand that.”

    Best wishes.

  7. In this case the desires of schlockers and the needs of my kids are in exact alignment. The best thing for everyone would be if books showed up right now. (Yesterday would have been better, but that doesn’t seem to be an option anymore.)

  9. Gleek actually did wear her pajamas to the library. It must be a measure of my stress level that I didn’t even notice until we were ready to check out.

  11. *snickers*

Oh my, she’s a sneaky one! I say don’t worry about it too much – it’s hot, nearly summer. At least she didn’t try to wear her swimsuit and snow boots.
